New and Useful Websites & Apps
The internet is full of websites and applications meant to make our lives better. Most of these sites do not live up to the hype… Here are a few very useful websites and applications that I have recently discovered.
ZEER
The purpose of Zeer is to display nutritional labels for all kinds of food. The site also allows comments, ratings and other useful tips. This is a great site for foodies, people wanting to eat healthier, or people who just want to see what others are eating and recommending.
5MIN
5min is the ultimate DIY website. Howcast is the first website like this that got my attention… However, this site seems to have a very dedicated user base and is full of great information and tutorials. So much easier to learn something when you watch someone else who actually knows what they are doing!
NEWSMAP
Google News is one of the best resources for World News, but sorting through it all can be a challenge. What makes Newsmap so useful is the way that the stories are presented. The website is built with a system that makes the most popular stories appear to be graphically larger. Different colors are associated with different categories of news. Pretty nifty if you ask me.
BOXEE
Boxee is the ultimate source for online videos. Watch videos from Youtube, Hulu, CNN and others all in one place. The user interface makes it easy to arrange your video streams, and the site is well integrated with an online community. Sharing and finding new videos is as easy as scanning a strangers playlist.
WIKIBOOKS
Wikibooks is basically Wikipedia – the extended version. Well, maybe it is more than that. An online library might be the best description for it. This site is growing quickly with nearly 50,000 pages of data.
DISQUS
Well, someone finally did it. A small script that you can put on any static webpage and instantly have comments. No need to setup an entire blog. Disqus’s comment system integrates with Facebook and Twitter, so users of either social network can easily leave comments on your site.
COMPFIGHT
Compfight is maybe the best image search tool out there. Compfight searches flickr for photos that match your query and arranges them in order of relevance. Sounds a lot like Google’s image search – but the search results are so much more accurate, and often yield high resolution images.
